April 10: Gratitude for Those Who Change the World

Today, I am thankful for those things that changed my world, but, alas, are no longer with us.

It was 60 years ago today

The Beatles taught the world to play. They were going in and out of style, But, they were guaranteed to raise a smile. So may I introduce to you, The act you've known for all these years, The one and only Beatles band.

Sadly, it was also 50 years ago this day (Apr 10) that Paul McCartney announced to the world in a publicly released statement that he was permanently leaving the Beatles. I’m sure someone woke up that morning, solemnly read the release, and uttered:

I read the news today, oh boy,

About a lucky man who made the grade.

And, yes, the news was rather sad.

How could it be?

For exactly a decade, the 4 musicians from Liverpool (John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr [who replaced the original drummer Pete Best after a few years]), had produced 213 songs and released 13 albums. During their tenure, they scored a score (20) of #1 hit singles, an impressive record that still stands to this day.  ‘We all want to change the world’, but the Beatles actually did so.

Even in the final few years, the British band desperately tried ‘to get back to where they once belonged’, thinking, for sure, that ‘we can work it out.’ Despite all the assertions that ‘I don’t want to leave you now,’ they just had to ‘let it be.’ The ‘long and windy road’ to reconciliation could not be rectified. All those ‘hard days’ nights’ producing music, performing concerts, and essentially ‘working like a dog,’ left them realizing that as a band, they were simply ‘not half the men they used to be.’ They couldn’t seem to ‘come together’, so their separation ‘left a pool of tears.’

In despair, I sat perplexed with a ‘shadow hanging over me’ and imploring aloud: ‘I don't know why you say goodbye’. But, before you knew it, they were ‘gone, gone, gone,’ and we all longed for yesterday.

And now my life has changed in oh so many ways, My independence seems to vanish in the haze. But every now and then I feel so insecure, I know that I just need you like I've never done before

So, today, I’m thankful for everything the Beatles have taught me. My humble lesson for you today is show your genuine gratitude for the things you have in life. Remember that today is just a day in your life and all you need is love. Remember that money can’t buy you love. Remember the love you take is equal to the love you make. Remember that when you’re having a tough day, you can always get by with a little help from your friends.

So, on this fiftieth anniversary of the Beatles dissolution, just take a sad song and make it better.
