January 18: Gratitude for Lessons Learned at a Young Age

Today, I am thankful for simple life lessons learned early in life.

In my job, one of my core responsibilities is to lead the leadership training for the development team leaders. To this end, we routinely congregate for lunch & learn or book club sessions to discuss the concept of teamwork and management skills. We read fascinating books that speak to the importance of having crucial conversations, exhibiting emotional intelligence, and working as a multiplier in a matrix organization. The books are all extremely informative resources, ultimately providing wonderful examples of leadership in action.

Yet, I’m often left wondering whether we could learn the same lessons reading fiction, and even better yet, children’s stories.

Take, for instance, the lessons I learned about a lovable, portly bear and his eclectic friends in the Hundred Acres Woods. In A.A. Milne’s stories about Christopher Robin, Winnie-the-Pooh, and the cast of characters that reside in the forest (Piglet, Eeyore, Tigger, Kanga, and Roo), I’ve learned many crucial lessons:

1. Treat others like you want to be treated

2. Always express gratitude to your colleagues

3. Show empathy & kindness to everyone all the time

4. Take the time to listen to those around you

5. Go after what you believe in

So, today (Jan 18), on the birthday of A.A. Milne, let me leave you with 5 of my favoriteWinnie the Pooh quotes, which mirror the 5 tenets outlined above:
