January 20: Gratitude for the Concept of Unity

Today, I am thankful for those you exemplify the concept of unity.

Today, as the third Monday of January (Jan 20), the US is commemorating the birth of the civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK).

I’m humbled by MLK’s steadfast commitment to the concept of unity, even though it would eventually lead to its own demise.  We all know his 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and its reference to being ‘free at last’, but the true message of integration, harmony, and concordance contained within that speech is often lost.

We all need to work together to realize a world, a community, and a workplace where all individuals, irrespective of gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religious creed, or political philosophy, can come together to meet a common mission. MLK said many, many wonderful things, but there is a quote he made on Christmas Day in 1957 which sums it up perfectly:

“Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy to a friend.”

We all fight personal battles that others no nothing about. The only true way to overcome our differences is to approach each other with a spirit of understanding, compassion, and empathy.  If we approach others with a sense of openness and appreciation to our differences, we are apt to find common ground upon which we can build stronger relationships.

May you all have a unifying day, filled with light & love for others.
